New York man gets prison for commuter bus theft

UPI News Service, 08/16/2013

A New York man was sentenced to up to five years in prison after he was caught driving a stolen Trailways coach bus, prosecutors said.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Darius McCollum, 48, was sentenced Thursday to two and a half to five years in prison for the Aug. 31, 2010, theft of the bus, which McCollum told police he used to pick up a flight crew and deliver them to John F. Kennedy International Airport, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

McCollum told police he was on his way to returning the bus to a Hoboken, N.J., depot when he was pulled over and arrested.

Lawyers for McCollum, who has 29 transit-related arrests on his record and has served 18 years in prison for various offenses, said the defendant is unable to control his impulses due to Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism.

Officials said McCollum is eligible for immediate parole, but it will take a few months to get the paperwork set up for an appearance before the New York State Board of Parole.
