For the first time in the New York City Police Department's history, an officer has announced he is well on his way to becoming a woman.

Queens Transit officer John Lo, 31, made the announcement at roll call Tuesday night. The 5-foot-4 officer asked to address the officers. He told fellow officers he had legally changed his name to June Lo, and had been undergoing hormone therapy for some time in preparation for surgery to become a woman.
The New York Post said many of Lo's fellow officers already knew about the gradual gender shift, and burst into applause.
Lo spent an hour in the captain's office, where it was arranged Lo would have a separate change room from now on, the newspaper said.
