New Band Aid Christmas recording gets church salute

UPI News Service, 12/24/2004

A senior Wales clergyman says Band Aid has done more to help the developing world recently than the entire Christian Church.

Proceeds from the new Band Aid recording, featuring vocals from stars such as Jamelia, Coldplay's Chris Martin and rap from Dizzee Rascal, will go towards relief efforts in Ethiopia and Sudan.

In his Christmas message Bishop Carl Cooper of St. Davids says the charity song that has become the Christmas No. 1 in Britain did what the Church "either could not or would not do" when it sent aid to Africa.

Archbishop of Wales Barry Morgan agreed people's hearts have been touched by the record -- although he said there's a tendency to get caught up with such concerns about world poverty for only the briefest of moments.
