Mysterious church party may be a scam

UPI News Service, 03/10/2008

Officials of a Roman Catholic church in Joliet, Ill., said they are puzzled by fliers advertising a party in the church's gym that none of them planned.

The fliers announcing a March 29 party in the St. John The Baptist Catholic Church gymnasium say a $20 ticket includes food and festivities. The only problem is that no one at the church organized the event, the Herald News, a Joliet newspaper, reported Monday.

"We learned about it when a police officer came in with a flier to check if we were applying for a (temporary) liquor license," officer manager Chris Tamez said. He added that he thinks the fliers are part of a money scam.

The Rev. Pepe Martinez said he talked to all of the church's affiliates and was sure they didn't plan the event.

Police are reportedly planning to keep and eye on the gym during the night of the mysterious party, the Herald News said.
