By Christopher Rocchio and Steve Rogers, 01/09/2007
MTV has announced that The Real World is going down under for its nineteenth season. The long-running reality show's next season will take place in Sydney, Australia, with filming scheduled to begin sometime in the first quarter of 2007.
"The Real World's global appeal has always been about giving the audience access into the lives of the diverse cast of characters as they deal with living in a foreign environment and were happy to take the show abroad for the next season," MTV executive Lois Curren stated in the network's announcement. "The rich, dynamic culture of Sydney is the perfect backdrop for a new season that will undoubtedly satisfy its loyal fanbase as well as attract legions of new viewers. "
"We are extremely thrilled to be bringing the show to Australia for its nineteenth season," Jon Murray, The Real World's co-creator and executive producer, added. "Australians are fun-loving people who love to party so The Real World cast should feel right at home!"
While most TheReal World installments have taken place within the confines of North America, two previous seasons have whisked cast members across the Atlantic to Paris and London. Besides filming in Hawaii for the series eighth season, this is the first time the show will go across the Pacific to take young Americans to the world's smallest continent.
Murray toldThe New York Post he signed the lease on a contemporary 20,000 square-foot waterfront house on January 8, but declined to say exactly where in the country's most populated city the house is located.
"All the iconic structures are within walking distance," Murray told The Post, including the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbor Bridge. Murray added clubs and bars "are right around the corner."
According to MTV, The Real World: Sydney is tentatively scheduled to premiere sometime in the fourth quarter of 2007 and slated to run 24 episodes.
