'Monty Python's Spamalot' lands 14 Tony awards nominations

"Monty Python's Spamalot" led the field with 14 nominations when Tony nominees were announced Tuesday in New York.

The musical adaptation of the 1975 movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" was nominated for Best Musical -- along with "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,""The Light in the Piazza" and "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.""Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and "The Light in the Piazza" had 11 nominations each.

Michael Frayn's "Democracy," John Patrick Shanley's "Doubt," August Wilson's "Gem of the Ocean" and Martin McDonagh's "The Pillowman" were nominated for Best Play.

"Doubt" had the most nominations among plays with eight. "The Pillowman" had six -- as did "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," which were nominated for Best Revival of a Play, along with "On Golden Pond" and "Twelve Angry Men."

The American Theatre Wing's 59th Annual Tony Awards will be presented on June 5 in New York, in ceremonies to be televised by CBS.
