Minneapolis precinct lies under water

UPI News Service, 11/13/2012

There's something fishy about one Minneapolis precinct: It lies entirely under Lake Calhoun, election officials say.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported it noticed after Tuesday's election no votes had been tabulated for Ward 10, Precinct 3B.

City Clerk Casey Carl explained it was the result of redistricting.

"It's the unintentional result of a programming error made in drawing new ward boundary lines during the redistricting process," Carl told the newspaper in an email.

Barry Clegg, who heads up the Charter Commission that is responsible for determining precinct lines, said the software that was used "could not draw the line around the edge of the lake without putting a census block in the wrong ward; it would just connect along the shortest distance between two points, which meant a line across the lake."

He said the issue was to have been resolved before the final map, but never was, the Tribune said.

So far, no one has been lured to the precinct to cast a vote, the newspaper noted.
