Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, has announced a free tuition program available for first-year students with a family income of less than $35,000.

The program, which has been dubbed the Miami Access Initiative, will start next year and will apply to academically-qualified incoming freshmen from Ohio, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. It will also be available to students transferring to the Oxford campus from Miami Hamilton or Miami Middletown.
The program will cover all four years of tuition for qualifying students.
"It's really about increasing the number of students who come to Miami from a low income background," said new Miami University President Dr. David Hodge.
Although officials told the Enquirer they have no idea how many students the program will bring, they are optimistic of the message such a program creates.
The average Ohio student pays $10,000 a year for an education at Miami, the newspaper said.
