Meryl Streep narrates audiobook edition of 'Testament of Mary'

Simon & Schuster Audio says its recording of Colm Toibin's "The Testament of Mary," narrated by Hollywood actress Meryl Streep, will be available in September.
"What Meryl Streep manages first is a sort of calm force; there is a naturalness in the voice, and in the phrasing. And then slowly something sorrowful emerges, it is like an undertone. It comes from the stops and the half-sighs and that can move into moments of insistent pain and out of that again into memory," Toibin said in a statement Tuesday. "She has a way of lingering on words and phrases which is always perfectly natural, but it gradually takes on a real power. I think anyone who hears it will be astonished by it."
"To have one of the great actors of our time apply her craft to the audiobook medium is a true publishing event," said Chris Lynch, president and publisher of Simon & Schuster Audio. "Listeners will be spellbound by her interpretation of Colm Toibin's vivid, compelling novel."
"The Testament of Mary," which imagines the life of Jesus Christ's mother in the years after his death, was recently long-listed for the Booker Prize and cited as one of The New York Times' Notable Books of 2012.
The audiobook version will be available on CD and for download Sept. 10.
