UsMagazine.com said the crash took place Sunday at 8:35 p.m. in Malibu. The actor-director reportedly was alone in the car at the time and no other cars were involved in the collision.

"Mr. Gibson supplied all the pertinent information to the officers at the scene, gave a statement and received a ride home from a friend," police spokesman Vince Ramirez told the Web site.

"His vehicle was towed from the scene. ... Driving under the influence is not suspected in this accident."

Gibson, 54, is known for his blockbuster films "Lethal Weapon," "Braveheart" and "The Passion of the Christ."

In recent years, he has been in the spotlight for a drunken driving arrest, allegations that he made anti-Semitic remarks to police in 2006 and claims made by his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, that he abused her and endangered their 9-month-old daughter Lucia.
