"The Producers," Mel Brooks' musical version of his movie by the same name, will close April 22 after a six-year, record-setting run on New York's Broadway.

The show opened April 19, 2001, and went on to break box-office records and win an unprecedented 12 Tony Awards.

The April 22 closing date suggests that producers were unable to lure the production's original stars -- Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick -- to come back for another turn, Daily Variety reported.

However, when "The Producers" leaves the St. James Theater, the creative team behind the show will still be around -- with Brooks, co-book writer Thomas Meehan and director Susan Stroman bringing in the musical comedy version of Brooks' "Young Frankenstein," set to open at Halloween.

Box office for "The Producers" has tailed off over the past two years, but the show -- both on Broadway and in various touring productions -- has collected more than $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide, Variety said.
