The Massachusetts cities of Cambridge and Plymouth are installing high-tech digital parking meters.

The cities are debuting parking meters that take credit cards -- known as "pay and display" because the machines issue receipts that drivers display on their dashboards, reported the Boston Globe Saturday.
"We are hopeful they are going to be great, that people will love them, and then we'll be seeking the funds to install them in other locations," said Susan Clippinger, Cambridge transportation director.
The new meters cost about $10,000 each compared with about $230 for traditional meters. City officials doubled the metered parking rate from 50 cents per hour to $1 to help pay for the new meters.
