Stewart told Newsweek magazine her show was doomed from the beginning, when plans were vetoed for her to "fire" Trump during her primetime debut.
"Having two 'Apprentices' was as unfair to him as it was unfair to me," Stewart told Newsweek. "But Donald really wanted to stay on."
Trump fired back via the New York Daily News Monday, saying: "I wish she would be able to take responsibility for her failure."
Trump told the Daily News Stewart didn't have the right tone for the show and had only herself to blame for its cancellation.
Mark Burnett, who produced both shows, appears to side with Trump, the Daily News said.
As for Stewart firing Trump, Burnett said: "Thank God that didn't happen."
