Married at First Sight star Matthew Gwynne has revealed he feels a least a small bit of regret over not inviting his parents to his wedding with Amber Bowles.

During a Wednesday appearance on Married at First Sight: Unfiltered, host Jamie Otis flat out asked Matt, a 32-year-old former professional basketball player from Raleigh, NC, whether he had any regrets about not inviting his parents to his wedding.

"Maybe a little bit," Matt confessed. "But it wouldn't have been fair for Amber in that situation, because our relationship can get toxic at times."

Not only were his parents not invited, but they apparently didn't even know Matt was getting married.

Matt previously revealed his parents had divorced two years ago after nearly 28 years of marriage. Matt was apparently disappointed in them and wished they had put in more effort into making their union last.

The divorce resulted in a strained and tense relationship between Matt and his parents, who used to be "very close," according to the athlete.

"[Our dynamic] can bring negative energy," Matt told Jamie, "and the last thing I wanted to do was to bring negative energy to my new marriage."

Amber, a 27-year-old eighth grade English teacher currently living in the Charlotte area, was a bit concerned when she realized Matt's family did not attend their Married at First Sight wedding for Season 9.

But after Matt explained the situation to Amber, she was understanding and promised to be supportive.

After all, Amber's mother had left her at a young age to pursue a relationship with another woman in a different state, so she could relate to having an estranged relationship with a parent.

"Knowing Amber has been through similar things in her life makes me feel like we have a lot in common and so we can create a stronger bond as husband and wife. We can support each other, and that means the world to me," Matt told the cameras in last week's episode.

However, Amber's mother went wedding-dress shopping with Amber before her big day and really stepped up to the plate during her daughter's wedding by asking Matt to dance for what was supposed to be the mother and groom dance.

Amber's mother clearly wanted Matt to feel comfortable in front of all his guests.

"I thought it was a really, really sweet and kind gesture. I mean, it meant a lot.  It showed a lot about Amber's mom to kind of come to my rescue in that situation," Matt shared.

Jamie then asked Matt how it felt to not have his own mother present for his first dance as a married man.

"It was really hard. I never would have thought I would not have her there on my wedding day. So, it was tough," Matt admitted.

In addition to Matt and Amber, Married at First Sight's currently-airing season on Lifetime also stars Elizabeth Bice and Jamie Thompson, Deonna McNeill and Gregory Okotie, and Iris Caldwell and Keith Manley.
