Married at First Sight star Matthew Gwynne admits his pride got the best of him when he and wife Amber Bowles talked about their finances and how she'd be willing to support him if he rejects a future basketball contract overseas.

Sparks were flying between Matt and Amber when they met at the altar and got to know each other better during their honeymoon in Antigua, but the mood drastically shifted when talk of finances came up during a dinner.

Matt said he wanted to put down roots in Charlotte, NC, and start a business, but in case things didn't go as planned, he asked Amber how she'd feel if he accepted a basketball contract to play in a different country for about seven months.

"I'm thinking [in that moment] that hopefully we can talk about possibilities and plan for the future in any type of situation without getting very emotional," Matt said during a Wednesday appearance on Married at First Sight: Unfiltered.

"This hasn't happened; it's not like it's going to happen no matter what. And yeah, I'm just thinking, like, 'Hopefully it doesn't upset her too much, just talking about possibilities in the future.'"

Amber admitted during that conversation at dinner she didn't like the idea of Matt leaving. She therefore suggested she could support Matt with her $80,000 teaching salary so he could stay home with her and figure things out -- but that apparently rubbed Matt the wrong way.

Amber told the cameras Matt confronted her that night off-camera and said she had "humiliated" him by accusing him of being broke. Amber, however, just wanted to be a supportive wife and let her husband know they'd be a team.

"I definitely wouldn't [take financial support from her]. As much as I appreciate such a giving person, I'm not just going to mooch off of somebody. That's not the type of person I am," Matt explained during his Unfiltered appearance.

"So it definitely threw me off when she offered that, because I was just like, 'I hope I didn't give her that impression in any way.' I was worried, like, 'Is this what she thinks of me? I'm getting into this so she can support me?' That's not my intentions at all."

Married at First Sight expert, Dr. Viviana Coles, then asked Matt why he had been so offended by the conversation.

"I think it's just my pride," Matt admitted.

"I think that totally makes sense! That's the missing link!" Viviana said.

Viviana and Matt were also joined by Married at First Sight's Elizabeth Bice, who offered her two cents on the topic.

"Guys, especially down in the south, can be very prideful people. So I can definitely see where you're coming from, why you got a little offended by it and kind of went into defense mode... It's a pride thing," Elizabeth said.

Married at First Sight: Unfiltered host, Jamie Otis, gave props to Matt for admitting his "faults" and saying he was too proud since some men struggle with that.

But Amber's fear of Matt playing ball overseas stems from a deep-rooted issue. Since Amber's mother left her at a young age, Amber apparently still deals with abandonment issues.

"I did know that her mom left at an early age. I didn't know she was still dealing with those issues on an intense level like she is," Matt said.

Amber's fear of abandonment and rejection also showed in the latest MAFS episode when she got angry at Matt for putting his toiletries in the guest bathroom instead of sharing space with Amber.

When Elizabeth was asked how she'd react if her husband, Jamie Thompson, needed to leave her for half a year towards the beginning of their marriage to play a sport in a different country, she had a surprising reaction.

"Oh man, I'm such a free spirit, I would be like, 'Okay, where are we going to go?! Can my dogs come?' I'm just go with the flow when it comes to that kind of stuff," Elizabeth shared.

"I would have to think of logistics, but honestly, I'd probably at that moment in time -- especially with a little wine in me -- would say, 'Oh yeah, where are we going?! What language do I need to learn?'"

In addition to Matt, Amber, Elizabeth and Jamie, Married at First Sight's currently-airing ninth season also stars Deonna McNeill and Gregory Okotie as well as Iris Caldwell and Keith Manley.
