The five couples were matched for matrimony by Married at First Sight's experts Pastor Calvin Roberson, Dr. Pepper Schwartz, and Dr. Viviana Coles.

Married at First Sight Season 13 Episode 9

The Married at First Sight broadcast began on Day 16 of marriage, with Brett saying she was "feeling some warm and tingly feelings" for Ryan and there was "a romantic dream element" to the situation for her.

"I am excited for our intimacy to progress," Brett acknowledged, before treating Ryan to a fun and competitive game day.

While playing a giant game of Jenga, Brett asked Ryan to pick a card and read it every time he made a successful move. On each card, Brett sweetly wrote something she liked or appreciated about Ryan, and he was completely flattered by the gesture.

Brett complimented Ryan on being unapologetically himself, driven and work-minded, holding her hand, speaking his mind, being open-minded about their match, his muscles, and more.

"It's incredibly frustrated not feeling the sparks at this point," Ryan lamented in a confessional. "I'm still waiting for it. I want it but I'm used to falling in love incredibly fast."

Ryan had high hopes he'd be able to fall in love in eight weeks, but he noted, "I don't want to build [Brett] up with words and reciprocation if I don't know right now where my head's at -- and that sucks, because I want this to work more than anything."

Meanwhile, Rachel gushed to Myrla about how Jose is the well-rounded person she wanted to be matched with in that he's social, kind and a gentleman. Myrla also commented on how she and Gil were in a really good spot.

Gil apparently bought Myrla a silicone wedding band that would be comfortable for her to wear to the gym, and Rachel called the move "romantic," although Myrla refused to acknowledge that.

"I told my husband that I want a Cartier one, and he said, 'Yes!'" Myrla revealed.

"Was he half asleep? Did he just finish his 24-hour shift?" Rachel joked.

Michaela and Zack were then shown reuniting after spending a night apart, when Zack felt the need to leave their apartment after their housewarming party.

Zack said he and Michaela were "in a rocky spot" because he felt the need to tip-toe around his wife, who apparently had the tendency to "blow up" from misunderstandings or during disagreements.

Zack revealed that when he called Michaela the day after sleeping away from her to talk about his feelings, he received a text message back in which she was allegedly being "childish." Michaela allegedly said that she would only text him and not talk on the phone.

"I'm very frustrated," Zack told the cameras.

Zack sat down with Michaela and acknowledged how they struggled with communication. Zack compared spending time with Michaela and fighting with her to reading an amazing book under a tree while bees bother and eventually sting him, forcing him to leave the reading spot.

Michaela insisted Zack had caused the fights and she never just "snapped" at him out of nowhere.

Michaela also reminded Zack that they were learning about each other and their communication styles, but Zack called that "a bullsh-t excuse." He shouted about how they have "a fundamental difference in how [they] handle conflict."

Zack worried they wouldn't be able to change who they are and he wasn't sure if he could ever get over the way Michaela seemed to handle conflict.

Zack said their inability to communicate effectively left him "heartbroken" and he wasn't happy about the place they were in.

Zack asked Michaela to explain what he could work on or change, and Michaela suggested he could do a better job of talking to her.

Michaela said she'd love to have a future with Zack and wanted their marriage to work but she was worried to jump right back in and be punished or scolded for any "minor infraction." Michaela wanted to make sure that her spouse would always have her back.

Zack told his wife that he was willing to try everything in his power to make their marriage a success, and Michaela agreed that she would put her best effort forth as well and stop internalizing her emotions.

Michaela also promised to hear Zack out during times of conflict and try to understand his position better before flipping out.

Over at Johnny and Bao's place, Bao cooked Johnny a beautiful dinner and wanted to show off her skills. Bao wanted to show Johnny that she can take care of him.

While chatting during dinner, Bao brought up how Johnny had been having doubts and wasn't sure if he was ready for marriage. Johnny admitted that he never expected marriage to be "so hard" and experience hardship so fast.

Johnny confessed that fighting with Bao scared him, especially because he was fighting for their relationship when he wasn't even in love with her yet.

Bao promised Johnny that she was "all in" and accused Johnny of "wavering" and sometimes shutting down and shutting her out. Johnny grew frustrated, saying that Bao didn't know what's in his heart, but Bao said she could tell Johnny seemed "deflated" at times.

Johnny asked Bao to ask him more questions and talk things out, but she pointed out how he can get very hot-headed at times. Johnny suggested that Bao should just ask him how he's feeling and not judge him or make assumptions about him.

Bao admitted Johnny sometimes hurt her by saying he'd like to duck and run at times, referencing the one time Johnny had said if they were only dating, he'd leave the relationship.

Johnny was disappointed their nice dinner had taken a tense and argumentative turn, pointing out how there were "a lot of red flags" with Bao even though they're similar in a lot of ways.

Johnny said he was tired of having the same arguments over and over again, adding how he wasn't sure what their disconnect was and he didn't want to settle in a marriage.

"I want to be emotionally connected. After the first day of our wedding and honeymoon, I didn't feel an initial spark. But I'm looking for it, and I'm looking for that to kindle into a fire. And I still believe that can happen," Johnny shared with Bao.

Johnny told Bao that he'd stick around and take things day to day in the meantime.

Later on, Rachel took Jose to goat yoga with baby goats, and Rachel seemed to fall harder for Jose once she saw him cuddling with and petting one of the goats. She envisioned him becoming an "excellent" father someday.

And the Married at First Sight experts asked each couple to talk about love and how they fall in love.

Bao said she needs her husband to find more common ground with her and accept who she is, flaws included, and Johnny shared how intimacy is very important to him and he wants to be extremely attracted to his wife.

Once Johnny revealed he learned about sex by watching Hentai, or cartoon porn, Bao laughed about her husband being "freakin' adorable" and so "dorky."

After Bao said she felt lucky to have Johnny as her husband, the pair kissed and went into the bedroom. Bao could be heard saying that they should take their microphones off.

Brett dished about how she needed to feel a mutual connection with a partner in order to fall in love and wished she knew more about how Ryan was feeling about her, and Ryan admitted they weren't "there yet" emotionally and physically for him.

"I am still waiting to feel things and it's slower than I might have anticipated," Ryan told Brett.

"But I will say that in my past relationships, I waited too long. I feel like the other person was maybe invested initially... and then I came around like too late at the end."

Ryan said the women lost patience with him in the past, and Brett was concerned about Ryan not opening up soon. Brett said she couldn't wait around forever as Ryan owned up to having a timing issue.

Myrla then shared with Gil how she believes loving someone is a choice rather than a feeling that just develops naturally, and Rachel opened up to Jose how he needed to listen and understand her more -- and talk less.

Jose explained how he heard his wife but wasn't really listening at times and he could do a better job at that.

Jose in turn told Rachel that he's never loved a woman before and only "strongly liked" a person whom he had dated for four years, so Rachel worried about how long it would take for Jose to fall in love with her.

Later on, Michaela and Zack were shown going out for cocktails together and having a lot of fun.

Michaela said life circumstances -- a man moving away from her -- got in the way of her being in love once, and Zack said he always had an idea of his future wife in his head and so he couldn't fall in love with a woman who didn't check off all his boxes.

After Zack rattled off a list of qualities he wants in his perfect spouse, Michaela feared she may never be able to live up to Zack's expectations.

Michaela shared with Zack how she was falling in love with him shortly after their wedding, like love at first sight, but she became guarded after their first fight. Michaela didn't want to relive the past, but she confessed how Zack's reaction to her made her take a step back.

"But I honestly believe we're going to get back, that we're going to work on it together," Michaela said.

Zack recalled being wrong in having lost interest in Michaela over one dispute, and the nice evening out apparently got the pair back on the right track and the right path. Zack looked forward to more happy days and hopefully falling in love with Michaela and being happily married.

"I'm happy. I'm happy as f-ck," Zack told his wife.

Meanwhile, Bao revealed how the pillow barricade between Johnny and herself had disappeared and she was working her way into his heart "like a parasite."

Jose was then shown designing coasters with Rachel for their apartment using scrabble pieces and cute words, and he asked her about having cheated on a partner before.

Rachel said she had cheated in Year 2 of an eight-year relationship. When she went out with girlfriends, she apparently bumped into a man from her past and "it happened."

Rachel said she was honest with her boyfriend the very next day and he chose to forgive her.

"Since then, I learned very well: don't put yourself in situations that could lead to that," Rachel explained.

Jose feared Rachel may cheat on him, saying "once a cheater, always a cheater." While he believed Rachel has changed as a woman, he still had concerns and said he'd never forgive his wife for cheating on him.

But the conversation apparently left Jose wondering if he could trust his wife during girl-nights out.

After Gil was shown trying to give Myrla a nice foot massage -- which didn't go well considering she rated her husband's hands a 5 out of 10 -- Bao surprised Johnny by setting up their apartment like a bar, complete with beers, darts and fried chicken.

"Johnny and I may or may not have consummated our marriage," Bao teased. "All I can say right now is we are both really, really happy -- really, really happy!"

And Johnny described his night with Bao as explosive.

Johnny then made a wager with Bao that if he won a game of darts, they'd have to do whatever he wanted in the bedroom that night and vice versa. Johnny ended up winning the game and presumably got what he wanted.

On Day 20 of marriage, the five Married at First Sight couples got together at Jose's house for a barbecue.

Johnny recalled having a "beautiful" moment with Bao when they talked about what makes them fall in love, and Bao shared how the experts' test for them "rekindled the flame" and spark for the both of them.

Johnny was "optimistic" his marriage had turned a corner because he was going to try to stop nitpicking about the three percent of things that weren't perfect in his relationship, and Michaela gushed to the women about how she had married an amazing and phenomenal man.

Gil was still waiting for a kiss from Myrla, but he did acknowledge that Myrla was being more affectionate with him.

"Being around the other couples does make me feel like me and Ryan might be behind. I try not to compare... but to me, it seems obvious that the others are having a lot more intimacy and communication," Brett told the cameras.

And Ryan told the guys he was having "doubts" due to missing "a spark" with Brett, who knew that Ryan was "waiting for a feeling that he doesn't have," such as butterflies or lust.

Ryan wished he was enthralled with his wife and wasn't sure if he'd ever get to that point. Ryan said he didn't want his marriage to just be "good enough," he wants it to be spectacular.

Brett, however, believed she and Ryan needed to do things in order to create those feelings, which probably wouldn't just show up on their own. Brett began to worry if she was wasting her time with her husband, who may not even open up to her.

On Day 21 of marriage, Rachel revealed she and Jose had said, "I love you," to one another while watching television on the couch together the night before.

Meanwhile, Zack and Michaela bonded by making a Shrimp Scampi dinner in the kitchen with the help of an instructor via Zoom given neither spouse is great at cooking.

Johnny also surprised Bao with a little art exhibit of their own in which they both painted a connecting picture of a sunset. It was "a redemption date" for Johnny and Bao considering he had ghosted her when she once invited him to go to a museum together.

But instead of flirting, relaxing and being playful, Johnny got annoyed and discouraged by how Bao was so focused on painting a perfect picture.

"It just feels very task-oriented, strictly business," Johnny explained. "It's the same old Bao, but after two successful nights and romance coming from both of them -- intimacy in the bedroom, fireworks -- I'm going to give it my all because anything feels possible."

The date ended successfully, with Bao and Johnny celebrating their masterpiece in each other's arms.

The episode ended with Myrla taking Gil to brunch at a fancy restaurant, where she wanted to order a fancy Chanel-inspired cocktail. Myrla loved having a companion with whom she could explore Houston together.

But Gil confessed the restaurant was a little too "bougie" for his taste and he's not a big fan of dining out.

Myrla shared how she loves to go out for brunch on the weekends and have two dinner dates a month.

"That's a lot," Gil replied.

Myrla said she wanted and needed Gil to be her brunch husband in order to fall in love, but Gil grew anxious about Myrla just wanting a husband rather than him as her husband.

"For me to keep going on the path that we're going, I need consistency and just feeling wanting, not feeling like you just want to be married because of the thought of being married," Gil explained to his wife.

Gil said they were aiming to fall in love and he didn't want Myrla to just be happy with a ring on her finger and any "silhouette" sitting with her at brunch.

"I want to feel wanted," Gil repeated. "That's basically what it is."

Gil told the cameras he was "a little unsure" about Myrla's intentions and whether she was truly interested in him as a person.

"If you really want this, show me it's what you really want," Gil told Myrla at the restaurant.

"I really want you to have brunch with me," Myrla responded.

Only five weeks remained in the experiment until "Decision Day."
