A Florida man said he finished his country-spanning project to spend a year staying each week in a different home belonging to friends, family or strangers.

Josh Sullivan, 28, of St. Petersburg set out on New Year's Day 2009 with five backpacks worth of supplies and spent the year traveling from town to town as he was offered places to stay with friends, family or strangers he met on Internet sites including couchsurfing.org, the St. Petersburg Times reported Tuesday.

Sullivan said his journey took him across more than 21,000 miles in 41 states.

"I made sure not to research the places before I got there," he said. "People would tell me, 'Oh, make sure you go here,' but nine times out of 10 they were touristy things. I wanted to find weird, crazy things."

The traveler said he kept money in his pocket by painting and selling light switch covers for $10, as well as proceeds from his art Web site and PayPal donations from friends and fans.

Sullivan said he is now planning to write a book about his adventures and plan his next project.
