Man's extended arm causes flight diversion

UPI News Service, 11/18/2009

A Scottish man who disrupted an international flight by refusing to move his cast-encased arm has to keep the limb extended, his U.S. lawyer says.

Attorney Audrey Marinelli told the East Boston District Court in a hearing Tuesday that U.S. Airways passenger John Murray refused requests from a flight attendant move his arm out of the way of a cart for health reasons, the Boston Herald reported.

The 49-year-old man was arrested and charged with interfering with a flight crew Monday after the Philadelphia-to-London flight he was aboard was diverted to Boston's Logan Airport due to the disagreement, authorities said.

Marinelli said Murray, who maintains a U.S. residence in Jacksonville, Fla., had requested a window seat because he lost a thumb and index finger and injured his arm a serious motorcycle accident. But he was instead seated on the aisle where it blocked the flight attendant's cart, the newspaper said.

Murray was ordered held on $300 bail and was due back in court Dec. 1, the Herald said.
