"It's a reinvention of the franchise that credibly passes on the baton to Lucy Liu as the lead character and lead of the film franchise," Dan McDermott, who will write the screenplay for Fox, told Wednesday's Hollywood Reporter.
Earl Derr Biggers invented Charlie Chan, the Honolulu police detective who solved murder mysteries while overcoming the blunders of his No. 1 or No. 2 son.
Liu -- last seen in "Kill Bill: Vol. 1" -- also will be executive producer of the Chan project.
Liu will get plenty of screen time in the near future with roles in Tony Scott's bounty hunter film "Domino," the indie drama "3 Needles," the thriller "Lucky Number Slevin," the vampire film "Rise," New Line's comedy "The Cleaner" and indie thriller "Devil to Pay."
