A Minnesota lawmaker who was chair-bound when a screw came loose in his prosthetic leg joked the incident was symbolic of the end of the 2011 session.

State Rep. John Kriesel, R-Cottage Grove, said the screw came loose in the final moments of the 2011 legislative session and he was the last legislator seated due to waiting for the House handyman to repair the knee of his prosthetic leg with Allen wrenches, zip-ties and duct tape, the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer-Press reported Tuesday.

Kriesel, a freshman representative, lost his legs to an improvised explosive device while serving in Iraq with the Minnesota Army National Guard.

"This is kind of symbolic of how the session ended," Kriesel joked while his leg was being repaired.

The lawmaker was referring to the Saturday debate in which he urged his fellow Republicans to join him in opposing a push to put a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage on the 2012 ballot. The House voted to approve the measure.

"It was frustrating the way Saturday went down," he said. "That was crushing. I had tears in my eyes."

"Don't get me wrong. We did a lot of good things this session," Kriesel said. "I wish we'd been able to finish on time. I hope our leadership and the governor can reach an agreement."
