The singer says longevity is the real prize for "Accidentally in Love," the group's Oscar-nominated song for the film "Shrek 2."
"The chance to do something timeless like that is rare," says Duritz, who co-wrote the song with bandmates David Immergluck, Matt Malley and Dan Vickrey. "Movies for kids don't seem to get old if they're really good, and Shrek's really good.
"Look what happened with 'Someday My Prince Will Come.' It becomes a standard. Then it becomes a jazz standard. Then it's the title of a Miles Davis record, y'know what I mean? It has all kinds of life. That's pretty cool to me."
Counting Crows' competition in the Best Original Song category includes "Believe" from "Polar Express,""Learn To Be Lonely" from "Phantom Of The Opera,""Al Otro Lado Del Rio" from "Motorcycle Diaries" and "Look To Your Path (Vois Sur ton Chemin)" from "Chorus."
The Academy Awards will be telecast Sunday on ABC.
