Lindsay Lohan to be charged with felony grand theft in necklace case

UPI News Service, 02/09/2011

Lindsay Lohan will be charged Wednesday with felony grand theft of a $2,500 necklace reported stolen from a jewelry store, prosecutors said.

Lohan, 24, is due in Los Angeles Superior Court for an arraignment at 1:30 p.m., Deputy Los Angeles District Attorney John Lynch said.

She plans to plead not guilty because "I honestly feel I did nothing wrong," celebrity news Web site TMZ.com quoted her as telling friends.

Bail will be decided by a judge, district attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison said.

If convicted, Lohan -- star of the films "Freaky Friday," "Mean Girls" and "Herbie: Fully Loaded" -- could go to California state prison for up to three years.

Lohan attorney Shawn Chapman Holley, part of the 1995 O.J. Simpson defense team, had no immediate comment, but Saturday "vehemently" denied Lohan stole the gold necklace with semiprecious stones from the Kamofie & Co. jewelry store in Venice, Calif.

The actress, who began her career as a child fashion model before making her motion-picture debut at age 11 in the 1998 remake of "The Parent Trap," allegedly walked out of the store with the necklace Jan. 22, the district attorney's office said.

A friend of Lohan's later brought the necklace to a police station.

Lohan reportedly said the store had lent the necklace to her and her assistant returned it to police, ABC News reported.

Lohan is on supervised probation in a 2007 misdemeanor case involving driving under the influence.

Superior Court Judge Elden S. Fox spared her jail time in October after she tested positive for drugs and violated her probation in the 2007 case. But he warned Lohan she'd go to jail for six months if she broke any laws or violated probation again before her next court date in the case, Feb. 25.

Lohan has been to jail three times in connection with the 2007 case.
