Lifetime network celebrates 'The Golden Girls' 20th anniversary

UPI News Service, 11/11/2005

Friday marked the 20th anniversary of TV's "The Golden Girls," considered by many to be the old-school version of "Sex and the City."

To celebrate the occasion, cable TV's Lifetime Network ran 20 consecutive episodes of the comedy that aired from 1985 to 1992 on NBC, the New York Post reported.

The multiple Emmy-winning show starring Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty continues to draw new, young fans in syndication on Lifetime, the newspaper noted.

The Post quoted actress Jennifer Love Hewitt saying she was "obsessed" with the show and should be named president of the fan club.

"Oooh, I love 'The Golden Girls,'" tennis champ Venus Williams said.

Actress Heather Siebert, 24, said she regularly gathers with her "superfan" friends to watch the show.

"It really is like 'Sex and the City' in the way that every woman can relate to at least one of the characters," she said, "there's the naive one and the smart one, and the slutty one."
