American Idol ninth-season champ Lee Dewyze's first single -- a cover of U2's "Beautiful Day" -- made its debut at No. 12 on Billboard's Digital Songs single-sales chart after moving 95,000 downloads in its first week of release.
Overall, four songs performed by the 23-year-old from Mount Prospect, IL throughout the course of his American Idol ninth-season journey appeared on the Digital Songs single sales chart, according to Nielsen SoundScan data.
In addition to "Beautiful Day" at No. 12, "Hallelujah" came in at No. 20 with 63,000 downloads and "The Boxer" came it at No. 61 with 26,000 downloads. Dewyze's duet of "Falling Slowly" with American Idol ninth-season runner-up Crystal Bowersox was at No. 38 with 44,000 downloads.
Bowersox's first post-American Idol single -- Patty Griffin's "Up to the Mountain" -- made its debut at No. 32 on the Digital Songs single-sales chart after moving 49,000 downloads.
This week represented the first time that American Idol ninth-season downloads counted towards Billboard's sales charts.
Similar to previous seasons, songs performed on the show were available for download via iTunes throughout the season -- however the show's iTunes site did not release any sales information until the week of the finale, citing fairness issues.
Dewyze's "Beautiful Day" debut numbers fell short of American Idol eighth-season winner Kris Allen -- whose original song "No Boundaries" dropped at No. 4 after moving 134,000 downloads in its first week of release.
American Idol seventh-season champ David Cook saw "The Time of My Life" drop at No. 1 on the Digital Songs single sales charts after moving 236,000 downloads in its first week of release and, overall, Cook had 14 songs appear on the list.
Both Dewyze and Bowersox have already inked record deals, as he signed with 19 Recordings Limited/RCA Records while she signed with 19 Recordings Limited/Jive Records.
The American Idol winner and runner-up traditionally have their debut albums released around Thanksgiving -- just in time for holiday season sales.
