Two of the most hyped U.S. females debuted on the "CBS Evening News" Tuesday night -- news anchor Katie Couric and new celebrity spawn Suri Cruise.

Couric made dual history by being the first solo female anchor on a major U.S. TV network and anchoring the first newscast to be simulcast on the Internet.
Foregoing the traditional "anchor chair" to stand alongside a giant video board, Couric began with a report on the Taliban resurgence in Afghanistan.
About 20 minutes later, she unveiled the cover of Vanity Fair magazine for the public's first look at the 5-month-old daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.
"After much speculation as to why she's been undercover for so long, this is proof positive that, yesiree, she does exist," Couric said.
Couric ended her first newscast by showing a series of memorable news signoffs ranging from Walter Cronkite's "and that's the way it is" to the "you stay classy, San Diego" delivered by Will Farrell in the comedy, "Anchorman."
She then asked viewers to submit phrases for her signoff to the CBS News Web site, saying, "who knows, maybe one will actually stick."
