Junior Kiddie version of 'American Idol' planned

By Wade Paulsen, 03/07/2003

Remember Shirley Temple? Would she stand a chance in front of Simon Cowell? We may get our chance to find out this summer. Variety reports that Fox has greenlighted a version of American Idol featuring child singers between ages 6 and 12 for this summer's TV schedule.

Although details of the show (or even its name) have yet to be finalized, Idol producer Simon Fuller has previously discussed using a talent-competition format to find perfromers for a band that he has dubbed the AJs ("American Juniors"). Fuller then contemplates starring the AJs in their own movie or TV show, sort of like a mini-Monkees.

Should parents allow their children to participate? Hmmm. Wasn't Michael Jackson only 10 years old when the Jackson 5 recorded their first hit, I Want You Back? He would have been perfect for this show's 6-12 age range. And look how normal he is!
