Josh Hutcherson reprises his role of young adventurer Sean Anderson from the first movie, while Dwayne Johnson joins the cast as Sean's stepfather, Hank Parsons, Warner Bros. said in a news release. Also starring will be Michael Caine as Sean's grandfather, Alexander Anderson.
Vanessa Hudgens and Luis Guzman will play a father-daughter tour guide team and Kristin Davis will play Sean's mom, Liz Anderson.
Directed by Brad Peyton, the new 3D journey begins when Sean receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist -- a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes and more than one astonishing secret, the studio said in a synopsis.
Beginning in January, production will move to Wilmington, N.C., to finish shooting after a holiday hiatus. It is scheduled to wrap principal photography in February.
