The incident happened Thursday when Mayer appeared at Fairfield Warde High, in his hometown of Fairfield, Conn., RollingStone.com reported Tuesday.
The 27-year-old Grammy winner had planned to donate a guitar to the school and sing a few songs, but was summoned to the principal's office.
There, he was told for the students' "welfare," it would be best if he left. He did.
The son of a retired school teacher and principal graduated from the school in 1995.
Mayer's song "Daughters," from his recent album "Heavier Things," is nominated for a Grammy for Song of the Year. He won a Grammy in 2001 for best male pop performance for "Your Body Is a Wonderland."
