A shoot-out between two groups of police in Jamaica is under investigation by the Bureau of Special Investigation, the Jamaica Gleaner said Wednesday.

Three policemen and five civilians from the St. Catherine region reportedly traveled to a guest house in a rural town in the St. Mary district early Tuesday. The house was already under surveillance by St. Mary police for undisclosed reasons, the newspaper said.

The St. Mary police raided the house and a gun battle broke out between them and the visiting St. Catherine group, two of whom were wounded.

The newspaper said locals say the house was used as part of a gun and drug-running operation.

"The three policemen are all constables. We cannot release their names because they might have to face an identification parade," said acting Assistant Commissioner Granville Gause of the BSI.
