Hung over? Put some honey on your toast

England's Royal Society of Chemistry recommends toast and honey to cure a New Year's Day hangover.

New Year's Eve is a day marked by increased alcohol consumption throughout the world, and many revelers awake with a vicious hangover. Drinking too much depletes the body's sodium, potassium and fructose, which can be replaced with a breakfast of toast and honey, Sky News reported Sunday. A hangover is caused by a chemical called acetaldehyde, which the body produces in response to alcohol.

"The hangover disappears as the acetaldehyde is slowly converted to less toxic chemicals," Dr. John Emsley of the Society told Sky News.

Other suggestions from the society include sticking to gin and vodka, avoiding dark-colored drinks, and drinking a pint or more of water before going to sleep.

Drinking more alcohol in a "hair of the dog" concoction was not recommended, Emsley told Sky News, as it may be a sign of alcohol dependence.
