Human cannonball's father takes over gig

UPI News Service, 08/08/2006

Human cannonball David "The Bullet" Smith's 64-year-old father is filling in for his son and thrilling audiences in Franklin, Tenn., this week.

The younger Smith injured his back Saturday at the Williamson (Tenn.) County Fair, the Nashville Tennessean reported Tuesday.

"What happened was right during the countdown, I stiffened my body like I'm suppose to and my back went into a spasm, like a cramp," he said. "It twisted and the cannon fired on me. I was kind of lucky with my flight ... I didn't have to do much with adjustments."

Luckily, he landed in his net and didn't break any bones.

Until he's medically cleared to fly again, Campbell said his father and mentor -- David "Cannonball" Smith Sr. -- will return to the family business and be shot 150 across the fairgrounds into a net.

"This is how I got in the cannon business," the younger Smith told the Tennessean. "My dad pulled his back and asked me to come and fill in for him."
