Howard Stern's new replacements flop in first month of radio ratings

UPI News Service, 02/28/2006

The ratings since shock jock Howard Stern left CBS Radio for Sirius Satellite Radio show his fans are less than enamored with his replacements.

Starting with Stern's flagship station in New York, WFNY jock David Lee Roth's first month Arbitrend numbers among the target audience of 18- to -34-year-olds dropped fell from Stern's 13.8 percent share to 1.3 percent, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

Although CBS Radio officials brushed off the slide saying it was expected, Radio & Records Editor Adam Jacobson called Roth's showing "perhaps one of the biggest and most high-profile failures in radio history."

He said the numbers show "all of New York has pretty much rejected Roth," the former frontman for rockers Van Halen.

Stern's replacements in Chicago and Los Angeles -- Rover and Adam Carolla -- also experienced a massive exodus of listeners, the Daily News said.

CBS Radio programming head Rob Barnett told the Daily News the drop was expected.

"This is just the beginning for this station and these hosts. We've said all along it's an 18- to 24-month process and we would never judge any show by one 30-day (ratings report)."
