A Maine hotel and restaurant said it will offer a $40,000 cocktail this summer that will include a 4-carat ruby at the bottom of the glass.
The White Barn Inn in Kennebunk said the Ruby Rose cocktail, which will be available from June 1 until the end of the year, includes Hanger One Vodka, St. Germain Elderflower, fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice, pomegranate and a spoonful of rosewater, the Portland (Maine) Press Herald reported Monday.
Officials said adding a real ruby to the beverage in celebration of the inn's 40th anniversary was the idea of a guest who was joking around with workers.
Matthew Swinford, maitre d'hotel at the inn, said officials came to like the joking idea.
"Rubies were always considered a very precious gem," he said, "and [late founder Laurence Bongiorno] would always refer to the White Barn Inn as a precious gem."
Swinford said the cocktail will also be available without a ruby for $18.
