A Pennsylvania lawyer said a homeless man reinforced his "faith in humanity" by turning in his lost envelope containing $1,440.

Robert Stauffer of Pottstown said he took the cash Tuesday to the office of the Chester County Recorder of Deeds to record some mortgages and once inside the building he realized the envelope had apparently fallen from his ripped pocket between his car and the facility, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Tuesday.
Stauffer said he contacted the Apex Community Credit Union, which had its name on the cash envelope, and learned the money had been turned in to police by a local homeless man, John Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh said he immediately knew he had to turn in the money.
"If it was somebody's rent money, you know, they could use it," he said. "It could set you back."
Stauffer said he is planning to meet with Kavanaugh this week to present him with a reward, which he said will likely involve cash and a donation to Kavanaugh's preferred shelter or food pantry.
"It reinforces my faith in humanity," Stauffer said of Kavanaugh's honesty. "I expected I would never see that money."
