HBO was close to clinching the fourth season deal with "Deadwood" creator-executive producer David Milch, Daily Variety said.

The news came amid production of the third season's 12 episodes, scheduled to start airing in June.

Milch has a two-year production deal with HBO that includes "Deadwood" as well as new projects. One show he's working on is based on the real-life experiences of his former "NYPD Blue" collaborator Bill Clark, Variety said.
