'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2' sets box office record

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" took in $168.55 million during the weekend, the largest opening weekend box office in U.S. history.

The movie with Daniel Radcliffe and the gang surged past No. 2 "The Dark Knight," with more than $158.41 million, and No. 3 "Spider-Man 3," with more than $151.11 million, Box Office Mojo reported.

Getting back to weekend figures, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," in its third weekend with Shia LaBeouf, was a distant No. 2 with $21.25 million.

All studio estimates of gross receipts for the U.S. box office are via Box Office Mojo.

"Horrible Bosses" was third with $17.63 million; "Zookeeper" fourth with $12.3 million; "Cars 2" fifth with more than $8.34 million; "Winnie the Pooh" sixth with $8 million; "Bad Teacher" seventh with $5.2 million; "Larry Crowne" eighth with more than $2.57 million; and "Super 8" ninth with more than $1.92 million.

"Midnight in Paris" was 10th with more than $1.89 million.
