Group bids to give Washington's RFK Stadium an unusual new name

UPI News Service, 04/04/2005

A group has put in a bid for naming rights to Washington's RFK Stadium -- with the intent to call it Taxation Without Representation Field.

Mike Panetta has started a grassroots effort to attain naming rights for the field. His group's Web site has so-far raised $18,000 in pledges. However, his fund raising has a long way to go, he told WTOP-AM, Washington, as he expects the naming rights to sell for about $1 million.

"Why not have grassroots effort to rename the stadium to have awareness about the lack of voting representation?," he said.

D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission Chairman Mark Tuohey said city officials will meet with three groups this week interested in the naming rights.

"It's our hope that by the end of this week, we'll be prepared to make a decision, and that we will at least have a decision by opening day," Tuohey said. "Signage and stuff may have to wait a few games."
