Gia Allemand family: Former 'The Bachelor' bachelorette died from apparent suicide

By Elizabeth Kwiatkowski, 08/14/2013

Gia Allemand's death was the result of "an apparent suicide attempt," according to her family.

The 29-year-old former The Bachelor bachelorette and Bachelor Pad contestant passed away on Wednesday at University Hospital in New Orleans, and according to an official statement released by Allemand's representative on behalf of her family, she had apparently tried to take her own life.

Allemand was found in her New Orleans home on Monday night by her boyfriend, Ryan Anderson, a professional basketball player who plays for the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans.

"Mr. Anderson contacted 911 and emergency medical crews were immediately dispatched to the scene. Tuesday, Ms. Allemand remained in the hospital unconscious in critical condition and on life support," the  statement explained.

"Due to a critical loss of brain and organ function, life support was withdrawn today. Ms. Allemand passed away peacefully with her mother, boyfriend, and other life-long friends by her side. As a practicing Christian, Gia did receive the sacrament of last rites."

According to the statement, Allemand will be remembered by her loved ones and fans "as a caring woman who loved her family and was well-known for her compassion towards animals and mission to rescue homeless pets."

The details of Allemand's funeral arrangements have not been disclosed yet and family is requesting privacy at this time.
Allemand competed on The Bachelor's fourteenth season, which aired in 2010 and starred Jake Pavelka.

Allemand was one of the last three The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love bachelorettes in the running to receive Pavelka's final rose, however he eliminated her in favor of Tenley Molzahn and Vienna Girardi at the season's penultimate Rose Ceremony.

Afterward, Allemand returned to compete on the first and second seasons of the reality dating show's Bachelor Pad spinoff, which aired in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
