Georgia motorists banned from paying it forward at toll booths

UPI News Service, 08/16/2013

Georgia transport officials said motorists will no longer be able to pay-it-forward at toll booths after complaints about possible thefts.

Bert Brantley, deputy executive director of the State Road and Tollway Authority, said some drivers complained to officials that they suspected toll booth workers of pocketing their change instead of tossing it in the coin basket to benefit the drivers behind them, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday.

"When it's only one complaint every once in a while, it's not a big deal," Brantley said. "But we had repeat incidences of customers not believing that their pay-it-forward gesture was actually making it forward."

Brantley said Abacus Corp., the Maryland-based contractor charged with collecting tolls for the state, informed toll workers that they are no longer allowed to accept the pay-it-forward donations and must return all change to the paying motorist.
