Detroit freeway bridges sheared part of the load off an overstuffed garbage truck, strewing trash across three lanes of traffic, officials say.

Sgt. Sheila Shields said about 6 a.m. Monday Michigan State Police found garbage still hanging from the Harper Avenue railroad crossing bridge and spread across three lanes of I-94, the Detroit Free Press reported.

"It's a mess," Shields said. "Some garbage came off on the first bridge, then the second bridge took a ton more down. And that's what's blocking the freeway."

Witnesses said the driver of the truck did stop but he was gone when investigators arrived on the scene.
