The U.S. Mint indicates Los Angeles-based Fox's marketing plan for the new Fantastic Four movie violates federal law by marking coins.

Fox had the Franklin Mint stamp 40,000 California quarters with a color depiction of the Silver Surfer, the New York Post reported. The company even sent out a fleet of silver armored trucks to deliver the coins across the country to promote the June 15 opening of "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer."
But the U.S. Mint has warned Fox that imprinting the quarters with advertising violates federal law.
"The promotion is in no way approved, authorized, endorsed or sponsored by the United States Mint," the statement said.
The Mint failed to comment on whether or not it will file charges against Fox, but cited a federal law that says anyone who puts writing on a coin will be fined.
"These are commemorative coins like many the Franklin Mint creates on a regular basis for various properties," said 20th Century Fox spokesman Chris Petrikin. "We were confident this coin followed the same procedures."
