Former 'Newlyweds' Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey formally divorce

Entertainers Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey finalized their divorce Friday afternoon, In Touch Weekly reported in Los Angeles.

A retired judge appointed to the case signed the papers in LA, formally ending the couple's four-year marriage.

Simpson and Lachey asked the judge to sign off on the divorce and allow the specifics of the split to be determined later, Us Weekly reported.

The process, known as bifurcation, allows a couple to finalize a divorce but put off determining financial matters.

Simpson officially filed for divorce from Lachey on Dec. 16, 2005.
