Kate Gosselin has decided to ditch her signature hairstyle for a new hairdo.

The former Jon & Kate Plus 8 star spent nearly 20 hours last week having hundreds of extensions added to her hair by celebrity stylist Ted Gibson to create her new coif, which will be featured on the cover of People magazine's upcoming issue on newsstands Friday.

"It's good to have hair again," Gosselin told People.

"I know this will be more upkeep than my old look, but I'm ready for it. I'm just grateful I don't have to go through the awkward growing-out process of short hair. I get criticized for everything I do enough as it is!"

It took Gibson -- who also appears on TLC's What Not to Wear reality series -- into the "wee hours of the morning" to complete Gosselin's new hairstyle, according to People.

He said it was the really short, spiky hair in the back of Gosselin's former style that caused the most problems.

"Bonding extensions to those little hairs really took time," he told People, describing Gosselin as an "absolutely sweetheart."

"In all those hours, she didn't complain once. She was so open to whatever I suggested, and willing to try just about anything."

In addition, Gibson said Gosselin "wasn't sure about bangs."

"But I find many women have that one thing they're afraid to let go of, that one 'security blanket' part of their look, whether it's a fear of going shorter or darker or something," he told People. "But once they finally let go and embrace the change, they always love it."

Last month, Gosselin's divorce from her ex-husband Jon Gosselin was finalized -- officially ending their 10-year marriage.
