Flyswatters wash up on Alaska beaches

UPI News Service, 05/17/2012

A sports memorabilia company said dozens of flyswatters found on Alaska beaches with sports team logos came from containers that fell from a shipping vessel.

The flyswatters, which began popping up on Kodiak beaches during the past week, bear the logos of various sports teams and were traced back to Team Sports America, a company that lost products Jan. 30 when a row of containers came loose from a rope and fell from a shipping vessel, the Kodiak Daily Mirror reported Thursday.

Residents said they have also found items including Nerf basketballs and aluminum water bottles among the flyswatters.

"We found three flyswatters on Kalsin and four more yesterday at Middle Bay," Kodiak resident Jessica Horn said. "We found three Nerf balls, too."

"This is a first," Team Sports America Executive Vice President Michael Sockel said. "We've never had anything happen like this."
