A Florida city council voted 4-3 to approve a plan to replace their city-issued laptop computers with iPads.

West Melbourne City Council members said they decided on iPads after learning they were cheaper than the laptops they were originally planning to buy, which would have cost the city $840 each as opposed to $735 each for the iPads, Florida Today reported Friday.

However, Councilman John D'Amico said he sees the purchase as "a complete waste of money" given the current state of the economy.

"This purchase doesn't look good in the public's eye," he said. "We need to set the example and get by with what we have. I think we can get more life out of these laptops."
