An Illinois city has officially recognized the historic site where the world's first Dairy Queen soft-serve ice cream shop once stood.

The Joliet City Council awarded landmark status to the building, which now houses a storefront church but was home to the first Dairy Queen in 1940, the Joliet Herald-News reported Wednesday.
"It was developed in Kankakee, but the first actual store with the Dairy Queen name was here," said Bob Nachtrieb, a member of the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission.
Dairy Queen, with headquarters in Edina, Minn., now has about 5,900 locations in operation in 22 countries.
