Patel, whose first film was the 1984 Tom Hanks comedy "Bachelor Party," died Sunday, The Los Angeles Times said.
The Kenyan native of Indian descent combined Hollywood and Bollywood for the 2002 film "Kaante," the first Indian movie shot entirely in the United States using modern Hollywood technology, the Times said.
Patel came the United States in 1982 to distribute his father's docudrama, "Amin: The Rise and Fall" about Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.
Two years later he produced "Bachelor Party" as well as "The Jungle Book" in 1994, "The Adventures of Pinocchio" in 1996, "The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli & Baloo" in 1997 and "11:14" in 2003.
Patel also helped pop singer Michael Jackson and Mark Damon of MDP Worldwide set up Neverland Pictures, a production company.
Patel is survived by his wife, Dimple Patel, two sons and his father, director Sharad Patel.
