David Kong taught kindergarten at Public School 126 in Chinatown last year and said that men would be pleasantly surprised if they chose teaching, the New York Daily News reported Sunday.
Only 2 percent of U.S. kindergarten teachers are men, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
A national study found just 9 percent of teachers in elementary schools are men, down from 17 percent in 1981.
Some blame the pay for not attracting more men. Public school teacher salaries in New York City range from $42,500 to $93,400 a year. However, some say there is a continuing stereotype that primary school is women's work and men may not be as nurturing as women.
