Fenders strum artful tune in Arizona

UPI News Service, 01/11/2005

In a display akin to Chicago's Cows on Parade in the late 1990s, 125 10-foot-tall Fender Stratocasters soon will dot the Arizona landscape.

Backers apparently learned from Chicago's lesson on street art and will anchor the guitars with 900-pound blocks of concrete.

The art display is part of the "On Tour," exhibit planned by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum that is set to open in September in Phoenix. Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Central Arizona and Fender Musical Instruments Corp., in Scottsdale, also are sponsors.

Designers include U.S. Sen. John McCain, hockey great Wayne Gretsky and musicians Bob Seger and Billy Preston. Nearly 70 sponsors paid $7,500 to $25,000 each to produce the one-of-a-kind guitars, which must be submitted by Jan. 15, the Arizona Republic reported.

The giant guitars will be placed for public view in Phoenix, Glendale, Scottsdale and Tempe by Labor Day weekend.
