A Florida town's new policy of criminal background checks for candidates has led to a false report.

David Nall, who is running for city commission, is furious that an inaccurate report blemished his reputation, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
Cooper City conducted background checks on all candidates in the November election and got wrong information from a vendor stating that Nall had been arrested for credit card fraud in 1987, City Attorney David Wolpin said.
The city did not post the information on its Web site but gave the report to five people who requested it, including Mayor Debby Eisinger.
This was the first time Cooper City ran background checks on candidates for office, a policy authorized in August.
"I have never been convicted of a crime," said Nall, a controller for a construction firm in Dania Beach and a Little League coach with the Optimist Club of Cooper City.
He said officials did not contact him to verify the information after getting the report Sept. 13.
City Clerk Susan Poling posted a notice on the City Hall Web site Thursday saying Nall has a clean record and apologizing for releasing false information.
